Cat Body Condition Score (BCS) Tool

Find out if your cat is underweight, ideal, overweight, or obese using the same 9-point Body Condition Score scale your vet uses.

Takes 60 seconds. 4 quick visual + tactile checks.

Before you start: about the primordial pouchMany cats have loose skin hanging from the lower belly behind the hind legs. This is the primordial pouch — a normal feline anatomical feature, especially common in spayed and neutered cats. It is NOT a sign of obesity by itself. The tuck question below asks about the front-belly area between the ribcage and the rear legs, not the rear pouch.

Can you feel your cat's ribs?

Run your hands gently along your cat's sides, just behind the front legs. You should be able to feel the ribs without pressing hard.
