APOP's most recent vet clinical survey puts US dog overweight/obesity prevalence at 59% — roughly 56 million dogs. The 2019 University of Liverpool / WALTHAM study of 50,787 dogs found overweight dogs lived up to 2.5 years less than dogs at ideal body weight, varying by breed.

What Counts as Obese in Dogs

BCSDescriptionWhat You'll Feel
1-3UnderweightRibs, spine, hip bones prominent.
4-5IdealRibs easily felt without pressing. Visible waist from above.
6OverweightRibs felt with slight pressure. Faint waist.
7HeavyRibs hard to feel. Waist absent.
8ObeseRibs not palpable. Heavy fat over spine.
9Severely obeseMassive fat deposits. Often immobile.

Why So Many Dogs Are Obese

  1. Following the food bag's portion guide. Bag instructions are calibrated for active adult dogs at ideal weight — usually too much food for a sedentary or senior dog.
  2. Treats above 10% of daily calories.
  3. Table scraps.
  4. Reduced exercise without reduced food.
  5. Spay/neuter metabolic shift.

Health Risks

  • Reduced lifespan. Up to 2.5 years less, per the Liverpool/WALTHAM 50,787-dog study.
  • Osteoarthritis. The single most common chronic condition in obese dogs.
  • Diabetes mellitus. Obese dogs are at significantly higher risk.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Cancer. Some studies link obesity with increased cancer risk in dogs.

What's Coming: Pet GLP-1 for Dogs

Cats are first. Two cat-specific GLP-1 trials are running right now (Okava MEOW-1, Akston AKS-562c). Both list dogs as the next planned species, but no canine trial has been formally announced. Realistic FDA approval timeline for canine GLP-1: 2028-2029 at the earliest, more likely 2029-2030. Until then, Slentrol was the only FDA-approved canine weight loss drug ever — and it was discontinued in 2013.

What Works Right Now

  1. Get a BCS scored. Free dog BCS tool or your vet at next visit.
  2. Switch to vet-formulated weight management food. Hill's Metabolic, Royal Canin Satiety, Purina OM.
  3. Calculate portions for IDEAL weight. RER = 70 × (ideal kg)^0.75.
  4. Walk twice a day, gradually. Build up over weeks. Swimming for severely overweight dogs.
  5. Treats under 10% of daily calories.
  6. Re-weigh weekly. Target 1-2% body weight loss per week.
