The implant platform behind the cat trial just finished dosing its first humans

On August 6 Vivani Medical said it had dosed every participant in SLIM-1, a small human trial of a semaglutide implant. It is not a cat trial and it is not a readout. It matters here because it runs on the same delivery platform as OKV-119, the implant being tested in cats right now, and it will report months before the cat trial does.

If you are waiting on the cat trial, the most useful thing that happened this month was not about cats.

On August 6, 2026, Vivani Medical announced that it had successfully dosed all participants in SLIM-1, a Phase 1 trial of NPM-139, a miniature long-acting semaglutide implant for chronic weight management in people. There is no cat in that sentence. Okava is not mentioned, OKV-119 is not mentioned, and MEOW-1 is not mentioned.

We are writing about it anyway, because NPM-139 and OKV-119 are built on the same thing. Vivani describes NPM-139 as a semaglutide NanoPortal implant. NanoPortal is Vivani's drug-delivery platform, and it is the platform Okava's cat implant uses too. One company is testing that platform in people this year. The other is testing it in cats, and will not report until next year.

The short versionSame delivery platform. Different drug, different species, different trial. It tells you something real about the implant and nothing at all about whether a GLP-1 works in cats.

What Vivani actually announced

The August 6 release is a dosing milestone, not a result. Every enrolled participant has now received their assigned treatment. Nobody has reported how any of them did.

SLIM-1 itself is small and deliberately plain. An Australian ethics committee cleared it in late June. It is an open-label, randomised, active-comparator study of a low dose of NPM-139 against Wegovy at 0.25 mg per week, over four weeks, in roughly ten people per arm. The primary questions are safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics, meaning how much drug is in the blood and when. Weight change is measured, but a four-week study in twenty-odd people is not built to prove weight loss and should not be read as if it were.

Vivani has said it expects topline SLIM-1 results by the end of 2026.

Why a human trial appears on a pet site

Because we already watch Vivani, and we say so on the MEOW-1 results page. Vivani is publicly traded and Okava is not. That asymmetry means a material fact about the shared implant platform can surface in an investor disclosure before it appears in a press release from the company running the cat study.

This is the first time that watch has produced anything worth publishing. It is also worth being straight about what it produced: a milestone in somebody else's trial, in a different species, on a different molecule.

What SLIM-1 can tell us about the cat implant

One genuinely useful thing. The hardest engineering problem in both programmes is the same: get a small implant to release a GLP-1 at a steady, predictable rate inside a living body for a long time, without the peaks and troughs of an injection schedule.

SLIM-1 puts that question in front of a regulator, in humans, with frequent blood draws and a marketed weekly injection sitting in the next arm as a comparator. Pharmacokinetics is the whole point of the study. If the implant holds a steady level across four weeks, that is evidence the delivery mechanism does what it claims. If it does not, that is a problem for every product built on the platform, cats included.

It also gives the platform something less glamorous and just as important: repetitions. Manufacturing the implants, shipping them, placing them in real subjects under a real protocol.

What it cannot tell us

Almost everything a cat owner actually wants to know.

  • The drug is different. NPM-139 carries semaglutide. OKV-119 carries exenatide. Those are both GLP-1 receptor agonists and they are not interchangeable, and how one behaves says little about the other.
  • The species is different, and for cats that is not a technicality. Cats are prone to hepatic lipidosis when they stop eating, which is exactly the risk you take on with a drug whose mechanism is appetite suppression. That question can only be answered in cats.
  • The dose and duration are different. Four weeks at a low dose in an adult human tells you nothing about six months of release in a ten-pound animal.
  • It does not move the cat timeline. OKV-119 topline is still estimated for summer 2027, and that estimate is ours, not a date Okava has committed to.

If SLIM-1 reads out well in December, no cat gets a prescription in January. Nothing in this announcement changes the tracker.

The order the next twelve months arrive in

The useful consequence of this news is a calendar. Three things are now expected in sequence, and only the last one is the one most people are waiting for.

Read across those and you get something no single trial gives you. Akston tests the molecule in the right species, but with a weekly injection rather than an implant releasing up to six months. Vivani tests the delivery route in the wrong species. Okava is the only one testing both at once, and it reports last.

The honest caveatEvery date above is an estimate. None is a company commitment, and the two cat dates are our own reading of the trial designs. Sponsors move timelines, and small Phase 1 studies slip more often than they land early.

What we would change our minds on

If SLIM-1 reports at the end of the year and the implant fails to hold a steady drug level, or the tolerability profile looks worse than the weekly injection it is being compared against, that is bad news for the implant approach generally and we will say so on the OKV-119 page, where anyone checking the programme will actually see it.

The loose end we cannot close today: Vivani has not published the SLIM-1 protocol in enough detail for us to know how tightly its NanoPortal configuration matches the one in OKV-119. Same platform is not the same as same implant. We have asked, and until somebody answers, treat the read-across as directional. It points a way; it does not measure anything.
